The earliest cultural relics and documents about camels appeared in China in the Chu State in the middle of the Warring States Period.

During the Han Dynasty, camels were used as livestock, mainly for war, transporting grain and grass, or as military rations in emergencies. As we all know, camels’ meat and milk are edible, so they were used in extremely harsh environments. , the troops carried camels to participate in the war, providing guarantee for the victory of the war.

Camels played a significant role in military use, especially in battles with the Western Regions. In comparison to horses, camels were better equipped to handle the harsh frontier environment.

The actual formation of the Silk Road(絲綢之路) began with Zhang Qian's mission to the Western Regions(張騫鑿空) during the Western Han Dynasty. Over the course of several centuries, numerous merchants from the Central Plains and the Western Regions contributed to its development. By the time of the Tang Dynasty, commercial trade between the Central Plains and the Western Regions had become highly prosperous.

Furthermore, a new group of merchants emerged who traded between the two regions, known as Hu merchants. The majority of them were Sogdians. As their numbers grew, there was an increase in the people traveling between the Central Plains and the Western Regions, resulting in a higher demand for camels as the primary mode of transportation. As a result, during the Tang Dynasty, it was common to see Hu merchants riding camels all throughout the streets.
